“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2Ti 2:15). “…correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth” is how the Amplified Classic Edition finishes this verse.
This dividing / handling skillfully of the Word of Truth can also be referred to as interpreting the Word of Truth. I did a Google search of this word and found this response (which they derive their meaning from Merriam Webster): “Interpretation is the act of explaining, translating, or deriving meaning from something. It involves making sense of information, behaviors, or expressions by translating them into an understandable form, or by offering a specific personal or analytical perspective” (AI overview through Google).
In a day and hour where people feel they have the right to announce “their truth” of things, I felt it necessary to shed light on that practice where the Word of God is concerned. Paul writing that the Word of Truth (the Word of God) needed to be rightly divided (interpreted) implies that it can be wrongly interpreted. We will now discuss the danger of that activity.
The very first announcement I want to make is The Holy Spirit is the ONLY One qualified to assess any interpretation of The Word of God (Truth)! He is the Author of it: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2Ti 3:16-17). “Every Scripture is God-breathed” (AMPC). “…knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2Pe 1:20-21). Here Peter tells us that Scripture came through the vehicle of prophecy and was written as men were “moved by the Holy Spirit” (another way of saying “God breathed”). He also stated that there is no private interpretation of it!
The Apostle John, in his gospel writing and his First Epistle calls the Holy Spirit “the Spirit of Truth” (John 14:17, 15:26, 16:13 and 1John 4:6). Jesus, while praying to the Father the night before His Passion, called God’s Word “Truth”: “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (Joh 17:17). Using today’s vernacular we would call Scripture “God’s Truth”. So, the point I’m making is The Holy Spirit must be the One by Whom we come to understand the Truth of Scripture. NOT traditions of men; NOT religious teaching that a denomination or group has passed on through time (we could really open up a buffet of worms here [‘can-of-worms’]). Things like ‘healing passing away with the last apostle’ (whoever that was – by the way, there are still apostles alive today!) – you don’t find that thought in Scripture! So, don’t embrace it! God still heals today! He’s the same “yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
‘Tongues has passed away’ – that’s a lie straight from hell! They take a Scripture like “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away” (1Co 13:8). Why not read a bit further, where Paul writes “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification” (1Co 14:5). Let me ask you a pointed question: does the church need edification today at all? Let’s be sober about these things!
The Lord spoke this Word to me a few weeks back (late May, 2026): “My gifts are given to accomplish My work in the earth, not to garnish your house as decorations.” This tells me He is interested in manifesting His goodness to mankind – like ringing a ‘dinner-bell’ – that will draw all to Himself, leading them to repentance (see Romans 2:4). The Holy Spirit came as response to Jesus asking the Father to send Him (Jn. 15:26) – He’s the Person of the Godhead that recreated the inner man of the Believer making us a new creature in Him (2Cor. 5:17). Romans 8:16 “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” and 1John 5:10 “He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself.”
I’ll say it like this: when revelation (interpretation) comes as one is reading Scripture (or hearing anointed preaching/teaching – since the Spirit of God is the Anointing), it will bear witness to their heart (inner-man/spirit) like alignment or harmonization. Your ‘knower’ (inner-man) will simply know it’s Truth. I’ll further say to be careful that what you’re ‘feeling’ isn’t some sort of relief because it agrees with your tradition of Scripture. I know this sounds confusing. The main point of this is to develop a genuine love for God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and to fellowship with the Holy Spirit so you can trust the interpretation you believe you’re getting. Be genuine with God, He’ll show you whether what you’re believing is Truth or not if you really want to know.
Here’s some sound guidelines: the Law of Doctrine requires two or three witnesses. In other words, find other places in Scripture where a Truth is discussed; read the context that surrounds it. God will NEVER contradict Himself. If you don’t understand something, ask Him to show you. As with all matters of faith: believe you receive the answer. It may come up in a sermon you’re listening to. Somebody may say something and the answer to your question will explode inside you; you’ll think to yourself “That’s it, that’s the answer”. – That’s called the inward-witness.
Finally, and I purposely saved this for last: Pray in the Spirit. That activity stirs-up the inner-man and the answer could arise from within. “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jud 1:20). Let me ask you: How does faith come (or, where does it come from)? – hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). So, this “building up” 1) strengthens the Believer in their faith, [which] 2) taps into answers! Some of those answers may be for life’s questions, and some may be for revelation (interpretation) of Holy Scripture!
We need to be accurate in our walk with God these last days! He’s desiring to manifest through His Body, touching lives with His glory – His desire of the ages has been to fill the earth with His Glory; plus, He’s coming back for a glorious church. I thoroughly believe that ‘glory’ will be a result of proper, Holy Ghost, interpretations of His Truth (His Word)! So, go on you glorious one you; rightly divide the Word of Truth, get full of His Word/Glory/Spirit – PRESENCE! Lead mankind around you by presenting them with His Goodness, causing repentance and populate Heaven!
